If you are volunteering with Camps, Groups or Overseas Adventures, you will be asked to complete a criminal records check (DBS, PVG or AccessNI), as well as complete training relevant to your role. This page contains all the relevant information about what is involved in these processes.
Important: Changes to the DBS process
As the Coronavirus Lockdown continues to ease, allowing more face to face contact with others, we have decided to return our DBS application process to its original state.
This means the DBS Identity Checklist must be done face to face and no longer by video call.
However, if you are still shielding from Coronavirus we can continue to offer the temporary measure as an alternative. Please contact the Volunteer Support Team (01582 58980 or email@example.com) who will be happy to assist.
Volunteering with Urban Saints
Urban Saints takes the safer recruitment of Volunteers seriously, to ensure the safety of all young people and Volunteers. To this end, Urban Saints require all volunteers to hold:
- A satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Certificate, PVG, or AccessNI
- Two references
- Suitable training, relevant to the role they are undertaking.
These checks are renewed every three years.
If you have recently completed a DBS application, why not register with the DBS Update Service, to make the process easier next time?
All Urban Saints DBS checks are processed through an external agency called uCheck. If we have requested you to complete a DBS check, then we will have sent you an email containing a link to start your application.
As part of your DBS application you will be required to provide certain documents to verify your identity. The DBS Identity Checklist must be carried out by someone with an enhanced disclosure (e.g. your Church Leader). Details of the documents you will be required to present, and the Checklist sheet, can be found here:
If you are unable to meet the criteria given in the Identity Checklist, please give Urban Saints' Volunteer Support a ring on 01582 589850 to discuss other options.
If you have been asked to complete a new DBS check, but believe you are currently registered with the DBS Update Service, please contact the Volunteer Support Team with the following details:
- Date of birth
- Certificate number - the 12 digit number found in the top right corner of your certificate.
Please note this is different from your DBS Update Service Account number, which starts with a C followed by a random sequence of 12 digits.
We will be able to check whether you are still registered with the DBS Update Service, and whether your DBS is still valid.
For more information about this process, please watch this video from the Home Office Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS):
If you have just completed a new DBS check, you are now eligible to register for FREE with the DBS Update service. This service allows you to:
- Take a DBS certificate into a different role or organisation without needing to complete a new application (saving considerable time and effort).
- Instantly update your DBS for Urban Saints every three years with no forms.
The registration process is quick and easy, and as a volunteer, the DBS Update Service is free to use, but it will not happen automatically!
To take advantage of this you must register your new DBS within 28 days of the date of issue:
We strongly recommend that EVERYONE registers their new DBS with the Update service as this will make it much easier for you to volunteer in the future.
