Supporting Volunteers to thrive
Anyone Volunteering with Urban Saints in Northern Ireland may be requested to complete an AccessNI check before they start Volunteering. The following information will explain what you need to do if you have been asked to complete a check.
AccessNI checks
If you apply for a volunteer role with Urban Saints in Northern Ireland, where there is close and regular supervision of young people, usually you'll need an enhanced AccessNI check.
We will request a new check every 3 years or if you have had a break of 1 year of volunteering with Urban Saints. This means if you are serving in a Camp once a year you may need a new AccessNI check every year.

Applying for an AccessNI Check
You will need an nidirect account and PIN given to you by Urban Saints to apply for an enhanced check online.
When you create your nidirect account, you’ll receive a confirmation email immediately. Once you activate your account you can log in and apply for an enhanced check. You’ll need:
- PIN given to you by Urban Saints
- Your home addresses for the last five years
- Your National Insurance number
- Your driving licence and passport numbers (if you have these documents)
We will then check your application and ask you to provide a range of ID documents to complete an identity check.
ID check
An identity check must be carried out with Urban Saints’ Signatory, or a trusted person.
Where possible the documents from Route 1 below should be shown.
You must provide:-
- 1 document from Group1; and
- 2 further documents from Group 1 or Group 2a or Group 2b
Group 1 includes:
- Passport
- Biometric Residence permit
- Current driving licence photocard (full or provisional)
- Birth certificate issued at time of birth
- Long form Irish birth certificate issued at time of registration of birth
- Adoption certificate
Group 2a includes:
- Birth certificate issued after time of birth
- Marriage / Civil Partnership certificate
- HM Forces ID card
- Firearms licence
- Electoral ID card
- Current driving licence photocard (full or provisional)
- Current driving licence (full or provisional) - paper version (if issued before 1998)
- Immigration document, visa or work permit
Group 2b includes:
- Mortgage Statement
- Financial statement, e.g. ISA, pension or endowment
- P45 or P60 statement
- Land and Property Services rates demand
- Council tax statement
- Credit card statement
- Bank or Building society statement
- Bank or building society account opening confirmation letter
- Utility bill (not mobile phone)
- Benefit statement
- Central or local government, government agency, or local council document giving entitlement, e.g. from the Department for Work and Pensions
- EU National ID card
- 60+ or Senior (65+) SmartPass issued by Translink
- yLink card issued by Translink
- Cards carrying the PASS accreditation logo
At least one of the documents must show the applicant’s current address.
Route 2 applies only where you do not have Group 1 documentation.
You must provide:-
- 4 documents from Group 2a and 2b
- One document must be a birth certificate issued after the time of birth.
- One document must show the applicant’s current address

Sharing with Urban Saints
If you have no criminal history to disclose, you’ll receive a digital disclosure certificate. You can view the certificate from your nidirect account. If the certificate discloses criminal record or other information or you requested a paper copy, you’ll receive a printed certificate by post.
To send a copy of your digital certificate to Urban Saints, select the share button on your nidirect account and include the email address ireland@urbansaints.org . When you share your disclosure certificate with us, it will only be visible to us for three days.
