Forged in Guildford

23rd Jan 2023

Back in 2021, a member of an Urban Saints Group made an unexpected appearance on BBC local news. Ben Perkins - a young leader from Urban Saints Guildford - caught the public eye because he had been developing his skills as an amateur blacksmith, including setting up an improvised forge at his family home. He had also decided to do the interview wearing his Urban Saints hoodie.

You can read the full story - including watching the news clip and an interview we did with Ben to find out more about his moment of fame and what it's like to be a young leader - in the following news article:

After our interview with Ben, we started planning with him about whether he could make some iron items for Urban Saints and we are now pleased to able to offer a limited number of iron crosses. They are made from reclaimed iron and handcrafted by Ben is a home forge in Surrey. Each one comes supplied with a cord necklace and because they are handcrafted, no two are exactly the same.

Ben is selling these items to raise money for a mission trip and gap year he is currently taking part in. However, he very kindly offered to donate part of the proceeds to Urban Saints too. They cost £31 each (including postage) but that includes £20 going to Ben and at least £3 going towards helping Urban Saints provide safe spaces for children and young people to explore life and faith.
