In time for this year's International Women's Day on March 8th, let's revisit the Shine Girls weekend last December. Hosting online for the first time in its 13 year history not only ensured it could happen during Covid-19 restrictions, but may yet see the annual residential grow in years to come too...
After 12 years of face-to-face Shine (a weekend for girls in December), we took the courage to go online, and we are SO glad we did! Shine was well attended with over 120 booked in. The girls received goodie boxes in advance that contained over 20 items such as sweets, face masks, cuddle bear, glow fingers, popcorn, fidget toys and much more. Friends of Shine, Linford and Joy Davis, joined us as speakers and were involved in a variety of the activities.
We kept to our format of four gatherings, which included worship and life-applicable teaching, and personalised the connection to the young people and their Leaders by using breakout rooms. Ten workshop style activities were available across the weekend, such as Boot Camp, making chocolate tiffin, a pamper session, and the classic Shine Quiz and Escape Room, even managing a non-silent, silent disco which was such fun! Young people from Wales, Northern Ireland, across England and even Australia joined in.
One leader, Di, said: “The Shine weekend brought some of the young people in my local community together for the first time. From this we are hoping to provide opportunities for the girls to get to know each other and continue to be discipled.”
Another Leader, Louise, told us, “Our girls loved the ministry sessions and are all
very keen to attend a weekend away next year. We are a very small rural group
and some of the girls feel they are the only Christians at school. It was lovely to
meet so many others with a faith.”
Our feedback showed that there was a resounding, ‘We’d definitely like this to
happen again and we hope to bring a bigger group, even if it’s online’. We have
turned a page in all that Shine has been and we hope to walk into Shine 2021 in an even more exciting way.
All the worship and messages with a host of workshops are available to watch at
www.urbansaints.org/shine2020 We hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

We've also recorded a special version of The Early Early Show for International Women's Day. This extra edition of our new chat show features guest host Priya (12) interviewing Shell Johnson. Priya was one of the 120 girls who took part in Shine Online back in December:
