Young people in 2008 live in a new digital world that is changing what it means to be a teenager in Britain today. Mobile phones are everywhere. More time is spent online than watching TV. 7 out of 10 have their own website or social networking profile. They spend time uploading their videos and downloading music, using instant messaging and internet chat-rooms. In the next few years, emerging technologies for the mobile phone and the internet promise to change how we all shop, communicate and express ourselves all over again.
This digital world is full of limitless opportunities and ultimate freedom but it is also fraught with dangers, such as abuse, violence and pornography. This digital life is also having a profound impact on how young people form their identity and beliefs. Image and reality are being increasingly blurred. It is in this world that the Christian faith must learn to communicate, express and explain itself in new ways.
How can parents, churches and youth workers not only understand what is happening but also change the way we work with young people to take account of it? The ‘Totally Wired’ tour will unpack the challenges and issues raised by this new digital age. Chris Curtis and Matt Summerfield will offer their insight, leading people through a high-quality, interactive, enjoyable and challenging event, exploring key questions to do with this technological revolution.
The cost of tickets for the ‘Totally Wired’ tour is £5 and these can be purchased from Urban Saints or through the local hosting church. The tour dates are all around the UK, throughout April and May.
Chris Curtis is currently the Director of Luton Churches Education Trust (LCET), a Christian project in Bedfordshire developing therapeutic work in schools. Chris writes regularly for Youthwork magazine and has spent the last year researching the impact of the digital world on young people. Matt Summerfield is the Executive Director of youth and children’s missionary movement, Urban Saints. Prior to his arrival at Urban Saints, he co-led the youth and children’s work of his local church whilst working in IT and mobile telephony as his day job. |
