Urban Saints Guildford Launch In Style
One of our oldest and most established Groups has relaunched in style for 2008! Formerly known as Guildford Crusaders, their name change and re-launch - celebrated on 4th January - signals a new lease of life for the thriving boys youth group that has been running for 97 years.
The launch of Urban Saints Guildford, attended by the local press and recently discussed on the county radio, was an evening of fun, excitement, reflection and anticipation! Black and white, with a dash of red’ – in keeping with the organisation’s brand – dictated the dress code, and the unveiling of the new Hall Sign marked the start of an exciting future for the boys’ group.

An important focal point for many local boys aged 9-18, Urban Saints Guildford is run by around 30 volunteer leaders who organise weekly activities, outings, camps and residential holidays throughout the year. Chairman Mike Gibbons said "As youth cultures, family life and the needs of young people continue to change, we have recognised the need to respond to this and change certain aspects of the way we operate, to ensure we remain effective in our work today. The name change is only a small part of our new strategy. In addition to changing the format of our weekly Friday and Sunday activities, we are looking to broaden our relationships and involvement with the local schools. We are also exploring ways of working more closely with local churches and hope to play a more significant role in Christian youth ministry in Guildford.

There is a great need for the rising generation of young people to hear the message of Jesus Christ and we are excited about our part to play in this. But I really want to make it clear that, although our methods change and different approaches may be taken, our values and purpose as an organisation has not, and will not, change. We are committed to the next 97 years of reaching lads for Jesus Christ, engaging them in effective Christian living, and recognise that Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever”.

Guildford Crusaders started in 1910 as a small group of lads meeting once a week to play games and hear about the Christian message in a room above Fogwills shop on North Street. In 1974 they moved to their current location - a purpose built hall on Stoke Park - to accommodate growing numbers.
