Volunteering
Around half of the UK’s adult population is involved in formal volunteering, giving an average 1.9 hours a week. It is estimated that individuals carry out 90 million hours of voluntary work across the UK each week, and the economic value to the country is put at no less than £40 billion a year with 84% of volunteers involved with voluntary and community organizations.
People volunteer for a wide range of reasons including:

* To make a difference in the world
* To belong to something they believe in
* To gain new skills and experiences
* To serve and help others
* To give back

The Government is now recognizing the value of volunteer and community organizations and now has specific aims to enable more people to become involved in volunteering at a local, regional and national level. Accompanying this aim is a commitment to ensure that volunteer organizations adopt good practice and are effective in serving their communities, encouraging well-being and providing best-value services. Recently, the Government has published a new framework for best practice partnership between the Government and the volunteer sector entitled “Volunteering: a Code of Good practice – Compact on relations between Government and the Voluntary and Community sector in England”.

This growing commitment to volunteering is very encouraging and it is essential for an organization like Crusaders to be pro-active in identifying, releasing and serving a growing volunteer community.
